Notes & References

This sheet contains notes about any special assumptions we have made in the model, and comparisons of disclosed cost numbers with modelled numbers. For maximum transparency we also list here all data sources used to construct the model.

Model users should have the opportunity to review the quality of the information used to construct each model. After all, it is the quality of the input data that determines the reliability or otherwise of the models, and if the data sources are not disclosed, then people are entitled to wonder about the quality of the models.

Each mine model therefore contains a full list of references and data sources used to construct the model. In most cases these include technical articles and descriptions published in the mining engineering literature and papers presented at professional mining and metallurgical conferences around the world. Company annual reports are also used, of course. Another good data source is Environmental Impact Statements prepared in support of new mines and mine expansions.

Mine visits are an important ingredient in getting the numbers right. While we cannot claim to have seen all the mines on the site – who can? – we do get feedback from registered minecost users who are familiar with the operation.

Probably our – and your – best insurance against mistakes is our policy of offering incentives to mining analyst subscribers to provide critical reviews of our operating assumptions and results. Our numbers therefore reflect the consensus of informed opinion about each operation.

Often our critics are extremely well-informed!
